  • Werecreatures
rdfs:comment
  • The origin of werecreatures is currently uncertain. At least one pack of werewolves' origin is described in their tribe's legends of Spirit Warriors, as one day a man left his body in spirit and was forced to share the body of a wolf nearby after his own body was stolen by another spirit. Then he was able to transform back into human through the wolf. His children and descendants were afterwards able to shape-shift into werewolves too, and would do so whenever danger threatened them, their families or the tribe. However it is not known if this myth is true or not, and whether other werecreatures were originally people who left their bodies in spirit form and shared the body with an animal. Some other tribes share similar legends, while others have none.
  • The second largest werecreature population of the swamp is that of the wererats, generally part of the Creep groups. A new breed of wererat has been created by Dark Pollen corruption, the Tyrannarats as the Bayou Halflings call them. They are typical specimens in human and hybrid forms, but their rat form is a terrible prehistoric dire rat. These hideous creatures have increased their rat form size to Large, have HD 6d8, and possess glowing red eyes.
  • The argument is complicated by the fact that many Norsemen are clearly tainted by Chaos, though they would say ‘blessed’ and many of those that may have once been deemed Were may possibly be well on their way to actually becoming Chaos Spawn. Away from the North, the story changes. Werecreatures seldom give any indication that they are anything but a Human. Indeed, those cursed with the “change” may even be unaware of their nature, shifting forms only when triggered to do so, such as by the moon, personal injury or the command of a sorcerer, indicating that the taint of Chaos may not touch all Werecreatures in the same fashion.[1b]

Being a werecreature seems genetic in most cases, inherited even from only one side of the family. However, weretigers are known to also be able to pass the species on with a scratch or a bite. None of the other werecreatures do this, although their distant cousins Children of the Moon do. In some species a particular trigger is needed for an individual to begin phasing, such as anger or the presence of a vampire nearby. The first phasing also tends to occur at around puberty, or in one's teens or early twenties. If the transformation is not triggered by this age, the trait will usually skip by that generation.

Away from the North, the story changes. Werecreatures seldom give any indication that they are anything but a Human. Indeed, those cursed with the “change” may even be unaware of their nature, shifting forms only when triggered to do so, such as by the moon, personal injury or the command of a sorcerer, indicating that the taint of Chaos may not touch all Werecreatures in the same fashion.[1b] Werecreatures can change their form into that of a beast. The Weres of the North are Chaos tainted, whereas the legendary Children of Ulric, if they exist, reputedly draw their power from another source.[1c]

The third largest werecreature population in the swamp is the werebear population. These black bear shapechangers are lords of the heaths and hunt for their food in the marshes. There is a spattering of werecreatures throughout Dreadmire of all types, including a small group of half-orc wereboar Bayou Punters. There are no known werewolves, but there have been isolated reports of a werefrog, weresnake, werespider, weresquirrel, and weremosquito (all giant/monstrous animal types), but so far none have been substantiated. The Arable Republic is known to have a population of shire werehorses in Millford Haven, and the Thalass Emirate has secretive werewhales in Loor.
