Clecky was a very good friend of the owl Gerul, with whom he traveled, and both shared a great love for food. He met the Redwallers when traveling through Mossflower Woods with Gerul on the night that Martin II, Rollo, and others were investigating the skeleton of Graylunk. He quickly befriended them and the pair resided at Redwall Abbey for quite some time. During that time, Clecky found the first pearl of the Tears of all Oceans. Both Clecky and Gerul were terrific fighters and helped Martin II track down Lask Frildur and his lizards, who had captured Abbot Durral and Viola Bankvole, although Gerul was injured in the fight along with Skipper and was forced to return to Redwall, Clecky sailed across the sea with Martin, Grath Longfletch, Plogg, Welko, and Viola Bankvole on the Freebeast and helped in the battle against Ublaz Mad Eyes and his corsairs on Sampetra. He lost an ear in battle, and it was replaced by a red velvet faux ear, which he thought made him look very dashing. After he returned to Redwall, he lived there for many seasons and became the self-appointed "Redwall Hare in charge of Nautical Activities", and demanded to be known as "Captain Clecky". Clecky was the resident Redwall hare following Basil Stag Hare two generations earlier.
