  • Beginning with the launch airdate of Season 4 of Lost, ABC has broadcast "enhanced" versions of episodes. The enhancement features pop-up captions of text, in some cases accompanied by still images of the characters or objects, on the bottom of the screen. Longer explanations are broken down into smaller phrases, which roll over sequentially. The enhanced versions of the Lost episodes were created by Met|Hodder, a marketing company commissioned by ABC who have also produced all of the Lost clip shows as well as the summaries Lost in 8:15 and Lost in 4:24. [1] [2] The enhanced episodes are also made available via streaming from ABC.com's full episode viewer, in addition to the original and un-enhanced versions. [3] Due to the WGA strike, producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse had no involvement in the production of the enhanced version of "Through the Looking Glass, Part 1". [4] On April 17, 2008, the producers stated, "The enhanced episode is sort of like a Cliff Notes for the shows."[5] In the March 18, 2009 podcast, the producers clarified that the Enhanced episodes are non-canon and that they don't have time to regulate them. The enhanced episodes are a strategy by ABC to encourage the recruitment of new viewers to Lost, especially during the sparse broadcast lineup in the aftermath of the WGA strike.[6] The enhancement of episodes is reminiscent of VH1's "Pop-up Video", which provided commentary on music videos during the 1990s. [7] The shows have yet to be broadcast outside Canada and the USA, but was shown in the UK on May 3rd and 4th 2008 as part of the "Lost Weekend" which also featured the premiere of "The Shape of Things to Come". On September 15, 2008, G4 channel began broadcasting enhanced versions of all episodes, starting with "Pilot, Part 1" . It is unknown who is producing them. For more information see the Lost in 2.0 article. These enhanced episodes are not part of ABC Enhanced TV, which provides Internet-interactivity during viewing.
