Zeus did this to appease Lamia in her grief over the loss of her children. In later stories, Lamia was cursed with the inability to close her eyes so that she would always obsess over the image of her dead children. Some accounts (see Horace, below) say Hera forced Lamia to devour her own children. Myths variously describe Lamia's monstrous (occasionally serpentine) appearance as a result of either Hera's wrath, the pain of grief, the madness that drove her to murder, or - in some rare versions - a natural result of being Hecate's daughter. Horace, in Ars Poetica (l.340) imagines the impossibility of retrieving the living children she has eaten: Neu pranse Lamiae vivum puerum extrabat alvo. Alexander Pope translates the line: Shall Lamia in our sight her sons devour, and give them back alive the self-same hour? Stesichorus identifies Lamia as the mother of Scylla, by Phorcys. This might be a conflation of Lamia with the sea goddess Ceto, traditionally Phorcys's wife and mother of Scylla. Further passing references to Lamia were made by Strabo (i.II.8) and Aristotle (Ethics vii.5). Other sources cite Triton as having fathered Scylla by Lamia. Antoninus Liberalis identifies the dragon Sybaris with Lamia, another conflation.
  • According to Greek mythology, Lamia was a Libyan queen who fell in love with Zeus, and bore him children. Hera became enraged, and murdered all of Lamia's children (one version of the tale claims that Hera forced Lamia to kill and eat her own children). Lamia went insane with grief, and began kidnapping and eating children, eventually turning into a hideous monster as a result. Legend states how Zeus granted Lamia the ability to remove her own eyes at will, as, otherwise, whenever Lamia closed her eyes, she would see her own dead children.

  • Lamias are the weakest of a family of creatures known as lamyros, of which the kuchrimas, lamia matriarchs, and harridans are also members. They appear as attractive, slender women from the waist up, with the lower body of lions. Being an entire race of divinely-cursed people, Lamias despise all faiths, and take special pleasure in inhabiting defaced, ruined, or abandoned sites of worship. Lamia matriarchs can sometimes have mystic proclivities, but these take the form of a relayed 'whisper heard in the winds' or similar ambiguous natural force that is credited by the matriarch with providing guidance to the tribe.

La noticia más antigua de estos seres se encuentra en el discurso quinto del orador Dión Crisóstomo, quien se refiere a ellos como "fieras líbicas", no lamias.
