  • Gomer Pyle is a hero from the 1964 American television show Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. He is portrayed by Jim Nabors. Gomer was originally a side character on The Andy Griffith Show and eventually starred in his own series called Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. for 5 seasons. In the show, he is a hero to his sergeant and all the people he meets during his adventures in the marines. Gomer's heroism comes from his ability to make up for all the mistakes he makes. For example, in one episode he continually ruins a raft that his sergeant was tasked to command. By the end of the episode, his sergeant receives a commendation because Gomer captures a submarine that the marines were trying to find. He has a girlfriend named Luanne on the show. However, in real-life during the show's heyday, there were rumors that the actor portraying Gomer was in a secret relationship with Rock Hudson. By 1986 Gomer's career in the Marine Corps had come to an end. Returning to Mayberry he and Goober Pyle ran a gas station/car repair shop called "G & G Garage."
