abstract
  • Conrad Farmer was a well-to-do man whose wife was pulled from Weatherfield Canal by Len Fairclough in August 1973. She had been depressed and meant to kill herself. After rescuing her, Len took her home and stayed with her until her daughter came home from school. Five weeks later, Conrad's wife told him what had really happened that day, leading him to look for Len to thank him for saving his wife's life. At the Rovers Return, Betty Turpin suggested that he look in at The Kabin which Len owned. There, he learned that Len was in France on council business but told the story to Rita Littlewood and Alf Roberts, who put him in touch with Len when the councillor arrived back in the country a few days later. The tale solved a mystery regarding Len's whereabouts on the day in question; he'd got a lot of stick for not turning up at Weatherfield Town Hall to deliver an important message to Alf which would stop him resigning as Mayor of Weatherfield. Upon Len's return, Alf and Annie Walker apologised to him for jumping to conclusions.
