abstract
  • PKDX-201r, released as Pokédex and now known as Pokédex 1.0 is the fiirst portable computer that is in a line of personal encyclopedias now known as the Pokédex. Though not the first of its kind, the Pokédex recieved attention when it was endorsed by the Department of Trainers as a necessary tool for a Trainer licence. Upon release, it was distributed to all 3.2 million trainers in Kanto after a select 20,000 worldwide tested it. The Pokédex contained information that pertained to its own region. The Pokédex was first developed in 1982 during the height of computer technology in the Pokémon World by two amateurs in the basement of the Celadon Department Store as an alternative to the big and heavy personal encyclopedias used by only advanced Pokémon scientists. Their product was finished in 1985, and they founded PokéTech Inc and proceeded to pursue government endorsement. The Pokédex was announced on April 10, 1987, and the Department's approval came only five days later. The Pokédex was an absolute success; Within a week of its release, it sold 90,000 units. Distribution to trainers began on September 18, and laws requiring the need for a Pokédex took effect on December 12. An update for the Pokédex came on March 12, 1988, to add Trainer IDs to the information provided. A second model, Pokédex 1.2 released on July 6, 1988, with expanded memory and compatibility. As for personal use, the Pokédex was used as a wireless phone and could play games; But like always, it came with an encyclopedia. People wishing to convert the usage of the Pokédex would pay a $60 commission fee. Support for the PokéDex's first model continued until 2002. By that point, it had sold over 3 million units only for personal use, earning 2 billion dollars for its gross net. Amount of Trainers grew from 3.2 million to 8.3 million. In 1998, a second model was announced, that being the Pokédex 2.0.
