The puppet design, a green frackle, has appeared as far back as on The Muppet Show in 1980, and appeared in The Muppets answering phones during the telethon. "J. G." stands for "Jade Green", the internal classification for the puppet. Performer Tyler Bunch originally created the voice as a way to annoy Dave Goelz in between takes. He hosts the behind the scenes featurette "Scratching the Surface: A Hasty Examination of the Making of The Muppets" and appears in several hidden Easter egg clips ("J. G. & Muppet James Bobin on the set" and "J. G. talks about permits"). J. G. later made a background appearance in The Muppets episode "Because... Love‎‎". The puppet was also performed by Tau Bennett in an onstage puppetry demonstration at the 2016 Vulture Festival.
