He epitomized rugged masculinity and became an enduring American icon. He is famous for his distinctive calm voice, walk, and height. As president, Wayne implemented fast-acting and broad initiatives, to both the economy and the intergovernmental issues in that era. His supply-side economics no-nonsense policies, dubbed Westernomics, advocated reducing tax rates to spur economic growth, controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, and reducing government spending on programs long thought extinct. He was also known for his conservative political views and his support, beginning in the 1950s, for anti-communist positions. While boldly criticized by later historians for his dubious economic standards, he is highly regarded in his ability in re-establishing international ties with countries in Europe, and his candor in strengthening communities around the nation. Wayne left office in 1977, amidst issues with the Middle East regarding the use of nuclear weapons. In 1981, the former president disclosed that he had been suffering from lung cancer; he died four years later at the age of 78. He ranks highly in historical rankings of public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents and is credited for generating an ideological renaissance on the American political right.
