L. Taylor in command. That same day, the command of Alpine was transferred to Commander Roger E. Perry. Manned by a civilian crew, she got underway on 2 October and steamed to Portland, Oregon, where she arrived on 4 October. Four days later, she was decommissioned at the Commercial Iron Works for conversion to an attack transport.
