He was a 3rd round selection (65th overall pick) out of Kansas State by the San Diego Chargers in the 1971 NFL Draft. He played four seasons for the Chargers (1971), the Dallas Cowboys (1972–1973), and the Houston Oilers (1974). Montgomery was one of the players (along with wide receiver Billy Parks) acquired by the Dallas Cowboys in the August 1, 1972 trade that sent running back Duane Thomas to the San Diego Chargers.
