Most ground equipment and vehicles continue to function properly though, but run the risk of getting struck by a powerful Ion Storm lightning bolt. In 2030, an Ion Storm kept the Kodiak grounded while Nod forces launched an attack to destroy the command craft. Later, during the Firestorm Crisis, an Ion Storm caused the Kodiak to crash, when a giant bolt of lightning hit it, as well as preventing any communication between GDI ground forces on Earth with the GDSS Philadelphia. An Ion storm also killed Ignatio Mobius and his crew. To protect its personnel as well as civilians against ion storms, GDI has built a number of storm shelters in populated areas. Richard and Julian Bashir sought shelter from it. (DS9: "Melora") In late-2371, when the USS Defiant was preparing to enter the Bajoran Wormhole against orders from Admiral Toddman, the Admiral contacted them and repeated his orders to not enter the Gamma Quadrant. Captain Benjamin Sisko and Major Kira Nerys pretended that his transmission was being garbled by an ion storm, and proceeded anyway. (DS9: "The Die is Cast") In 2374, Morn faked his death in an ion storm. His cargo ship was supposedly caught in one. (DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn?") Ionic storms above level 8 were a threat to Intrepid-class starships. The USS Voyager encountered level 7 and level 8 storms in the Delta Quadrant in 2375. (VOY: "Once Upon a Time") A Borg sphere was heavily damaged by an ion storm in 2375. As a result, it was chosen by the Voyager crew to be the target of a raid to steal a transwarp coil. (VOY: "Dark Frontier") Not long after, Chakotay asked Janeway whether the turbulence of chaotic space was an ion storm. (VOY: "The Fight") A Druoda series 5 long-range tactical armor unit was capable of flying through an ion storm and still reaching its eventual target. In 2286, as part of a ruse to kidnap a high-ranking Starfleet officer and launch an invasion of the Federation, the Klingon Empire created an artifical ion storm using a generator device installed aboard the battlecruiser IKS Mauler, which had the capability to activate or deactivate the storm at will.
