He had an elder brother, Edward, who was killed at the Battle of Fontenoy, being then lieutenant-colonel of the 31st Foot. Sir Charles attained the rank of colonel in the Army on 30 November 1755, major-general on 25 June 1759, colonel of the Queen's Royal Regiment on 27 November 1760, and lieutenant-general on 19 January 1761.
