However, its operations are largely funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Its headquarters are in Arlington, Virginia. PBS is the most prominent provider of programming to U.S. public television stations, distributing series such as PBS NewsHour, Masterpiece, and Frontline. Since the mid-2000s, Roper polls commissioned by PBS have consistently placed the service as America's most trusted national institution. However, PBS is not responsible for all programming carried on public TV stations; in fact, stations usually receive a large portion of their content (including most pledge drive specials) from third-party sources, such as American Public Television, NETA, WTTW National Productions and independent producers. This distinction is a frequent source of viewer confusion. PBS also has a subsidiary called National Datacast (NDI), which offers datacasting services via member stations. This helps PBS and its member stations earn extra revenue.

From Season 46 onwards, PBS will air new Sesame Street episodes on an 8-month delay from their HBO premieres. PBS is also home to the Jim Henson Company's television series Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train. A popular series on the channel, Great Performances, aired the documentary The World of Jim Henson. Similarly, Independent Lens featured The World According to Sesame Street and Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey. The television specials Sesame Street, Special and Big Bird's Birthday or Let Me Eat Cake were both produced as pledge-drive specials and included sequences that discussed public television, mentioned various PBS shows, and led to real pledge breaks. Muppet characters appeared in a number of PBS insertials in 1974. In 1979, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Ernie, Bert, Cookie Monster, and Grover all appeared in a PBS fundraiser marathon, while Statler and Waldorf appeared in a fundraiser in 1983. Muppet characters (especially ones from Sesame Street) have appeared in PBS Interstitials, and have made guest appearances on PBS shows including The Electric Company, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, and Between the Lions. PBS also broadcast Here Come the Puppets, which was hosted by Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog, with appearances by other Muppets. Weekly online video series National Film Society released a 2013 episode called "Cookie Monster Spoofs Hollywood Movies". In 2011, KCET, the former PBS affiliate of California, aired Construction Site and The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss as a part of the "Captain Infinity Theatre" programming block (now renamed KCET Kids).

Funded, "by viewers like you", through your tax dollars and begging non-stop for more "pledge" money 24x7. When not begging for money, they frequently televise programs produced with their comrades, like FRONTLINE, which is produced with the help of the New York Times. When the People's Broadcasting System isn't showing indoctrunational programming such as Seaseme Street, they are known for showing programming which no-one watches such as ballet. This is used in the left's secret emasculation centers in an attempt to create more creatures in their own image. PBS should be avoided at all costs.

The model airings stopped airing on September 2013, airing the CGI Series more often. A microsite was added on the PBS Kids website as well. An Underwriting spot was added on 21 September 2013 with the narrator of Thomas & Friends, Mark Moraghan announcing it. PBS Kids Sprout started to release Thomas on Comcast On-Demand on 4 April 2005 and 13 September 2005 on TV. They aired restored versions of Season 1-4 and aired most of the entire classic series as individual episodes for the first time in the US. Thomas stopped airing on Sprout in Autumn 2015 because NBC Universal/Comcast took full control of the channel and dropped PBS Kids from their branding. On 16 January 2017, PBS launched a brand new 24/7/365 channel, called PBS Kids Channel. Thomas is aired in a daily hour-long slot at 11am EST.
