Gorgonopsid was very large for an animal for it's time, and was the most powerful land predator up until that time. Gorgonopsid became extinct at the end of the Permian era when it was part of the greatest extinction ever that wiped out 90% of life on Earth.
- They were more closely related to mammals than reptiles, despite the name. They were probably inactive ambush predators; waiting for their prey to come to them rather than hunting for it. Nothing would ever rival them except the big dinosaurs of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. In fact, they probably became extinct because they were outnumbered, outrunned, and outwitted by the dinosaurs!
