The team emerged as a result of the purchase of the Sauber team by BMW in 2006. The team scored one win and 16 podium finishes from 70 Grands Prix, and secured second place in the 2007 World Constructors Championship, behind Ferrari (McLaren would also have finished ahead of BMW Sauber, had they not been disqualified from the championship). At the end of the 2009 season, the team was sold back to Peter Sauber, and reverted to the Sauber name in 2011.

W jej barwach startował niegdyś Robert Kubica, ale team bardzo silnie pracował na to, aby był kojarzony z Nickiem Heidfeldem. Nie udało im się to i do dziś są znani z beznadziejnej taktyki, błędów i wielu wtop. Mimo, że sponsorami teamu były Petronas i Red Bull, a teraz Burger King, to zespół ma wiele wspólnego z Perwollem.
