The bombardment there set off huge fires in the waterfront district. In 1942 General Irving Morrell concentrate his forces in built up areas by Lake Erie between Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania. This forced Confederate General George Patton to take the cities and towns with his barrels during Operation Coalscuttle since he could not surround them. In turn, this inflicted heavy casualties and slowed Patton's advance on Pittsburgh.
