The altered timeline it belonged to was created after old Biff Tannen took Grays Sports Almanac and stole the DeLorean time machine in 2015, then headed back to 1955 to hand it over to his younger self. As a result, Biff became "the luckiest man on Earth" by successfully betting on everything from horse racing to boxing and amassing a fortune, due to having the results in the almanac. He founded BiffCo, a company that deals with toxic waste reclamation; bought out the Hill Valley Police Department; and even altered the state of international history, by prolonging the Vietnam War and getting President Richard Nixon elected to his fifth term. Biff constructed his Biff Tannen's Pleasure Paradise Casino & Hotel on the site of the Hill Valley Courthouse in downtown Hill Valley after a successful campaign lobbying to legalize gambling in, at least the state of California, in 1979. However, not even Biff got rid of the courthouse's clock tower — he merely incorporated it into his casino. In this reality, Biff was responsible for the death of George McFly in 1973, and married Lorraine Baines McFly after the three kids were born. However, Lorraine and Marty are in an abusive relationship with Biff. Hill Valley, now known as "Hell Valley", was now a violent crime-infested city where biker gangs and criminals made their home. Hill Valley High School in this timeline burned down in 1979, and remained in ruins for at least six years, leaving Marty's priniciple, Mr Strickland, to turn into a marksman. Red the Bum is still a bum in this altered timeline, much as Joey Baines is still a jailbird. Also, Doctor Emmet Brown as his problems too. Biff declared him legally insane, and was sentanced to life in a mental asylum. The designation "1985A" was given by Emmett Brown on a damaged blackboard as he explained his theory to Marty McFly. The timeline's name should more accurately be "1985B", with "1985A" being the alternate timeline created by the events of Marty's original trip to 1955, though this can be explained away as the result of said trip meaning that Doc never experienced the original version of 1985. When Marty and Doctor Brown managed to get back the sports almanac from Biff in 1955, alternate 1985 was changed back into the happy place Doc and Marty knew. George is alive, Emmet is not locked up, and Hell Valley is once again Hill Valley.
