In 2267, he would succeed Pavel Chekov as the navigator on the ISS Enterprise under the command of Grand Admiral Spock. In 2272, he would recently find himself promoted to become the second officer of the Enterprise under the command of Spock when he becomes Grand Admiral . In 2277, he would later become first officer of the Enterprise, still under the command of Grand Admiral Spock after the execution of his predecessor Willard Decker, with Spock at the same time becoming Grand Admiral after executing his father, Matthew Decker. When Spock was crowned Emperor of the Terran Empire later that year, Riley became captain of the Enterprise and held the position until 2287, at which time he was succeeded by his first officer Saavik.
