When Barnabas Collins first arrived in parallel time in 1970, Mister Trask (generally called only "Trask" just as Julia Hoffman was known as "Hoffman") was on a long vacation. He had been gone nearly a year, having left shortly after the death of one of Angelique Stokes Collins's paramours (however he claimed that it was due to a crisis in his brother's family). As such, he was gone when the mistress of the house died.
