It just so happened that Hugo Vasquez found out that his daughter had inherited his mentality about life and could match him on stubbornness, making him somehow love his daughter more than he had before. He and his wife taught her everything that they knew, her mother covering pretty much everything, and Hugo covering his field of expertise: war. This was information that would do his daughter very well when he and his wife were ripped from his daughter's life when they died during the Chrell Invasion. Ashley was in her late teens when her father was killed, and with no legal guardian, signed whatever paperwork was necessary to join the military to fight. The Marine Corps turned her down as, despite a war going on, still maintained their standards of not allowing women in the infantry. The Army was far more accepting and she was soon trained as an 11B at Fort Benning. Fighting the Chrell allowed her to put into practice everything that he father had taught her, and she was even considered, in spite of her young age, for Task Force 141. By the time the war ended, she had risen to the rank of Staff Sergeant. But she had to figure out what she was going to do with the rest of her life, now the Chrell were gone. It was here that she was approached by Christian Sommers.
