Launched April 24, 1971 at Avondale Shipyard near New Orleans, Louisiana, she was commissioned August 4, 1972 in Honolulu. She received a $55 million Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization Program (FRAM) upgrade at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, Washington between July 1990 and December 1992. The ship was named for David H. Jarvis, a hero of the United States Revenue Cutter Service. During the harsh winter of 1897-1898, Lieutenant Jarvis of the US Revenue Cutter Bear led the Overland Relief Expedition to bring needed food to 265 whalers whose ships had been stranded in the ice off the northern coast of Alaska. Jarvis completed her final cruise in late September 2012, and was removed from active service the following week. Admiral Cecil D. Haney (Cmdr US Pacific Fleet) said that the Jarvis is scheduled to be transferred to Bangladesh in mid-2013. A team of US Coast Guard personnel visited Bangladesh in February 2013 for a definitization meeting. The first group of Bangladesh Navy personnel, consisting of 7 officers and 13 sailors, left Bangladesh in February and will start training onboard Jarvis starting on March 13, 2013. It is expected that the cutter will be transferred to Bangladesh Navy on May 22 and, and after renovation, she will be commmissioned into the Bangladesh Navy as BNS Sumudro Joy on October 11, 2013.[citation needed] BNS Somudro Joy will be heavily upgraded into a guided missile frigate. It will be armed with 8 modern C-802A anti-ship-missiles, it will be also armed with FM-90 or FL-3000 surface-to-air missiles. It will have AW-109ZN ASW or Z-9C ASW helicopter on board.[citation needed]
