The Tikuna was then incorporated into the Navy on July 21, 2006 when she was transferred to the Naval Operations Command. It is the fourth Brazilian Navy submarine built into the strategy of learning how to "Design, Construction and Repair" these resources. It is the largest ever built by the country. Her design is based on that of the German Type 209 submarine. The Tikuna incorporates several technological innovations that provide better performance, a lower signature, a lower noise signature and allow for a longer period of submerged operations.
