Er zieht einen langen Schweif aus ionisiertem Gas hinter sich her, der die Sensoren eines Raumschiffs im Einflussbereich stört. 2266 wollen sowohl Captain James T. Kirk als auch der Kommandant des Flaggschiffs des Praetors, der den Neutrale-Zone-Zwischenfall ausgelöst hat, Icarus IV nutzen, um ihren Gegner zu schlagen. Captain Kirk plant, den Bird-of-Prey, der getarnt ist, in den Schweif zu verfolgen, wo er trotz seines Unsichtbarkeitsschirms eine Spur im Gas hinterlassen muss. Dann sollen die Phaser auf die Spur abgefeuert werden. Der Romulaner dagegen möchte die USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in den Schweif locken, damit ihre Sensoren geblendet werden, so dass er sich in Angriffsposition bringen und sie, wenn sie den Schweif verlässt, angreifen kann. Die Enterprise durchquert den Schweif, ohne einen Hinweis auf den Gegner zu finden. Kirk erkennt, dass der Romulaner seinen Plan durchschaut hat und lässt die Phaser ungezielt abfeuern und einen Trefferteppich legen. Dabei wird der Bird-of-Prey schwer getroffen, der Centurio stirbt.
