Like Victor Hugo, he unsuccessfully intended his artistic work to serve a dual purpose—to be entertaining and political. The results played out in the theatrical world of the Grands Theatres, the Boulevards and beyond during the Parisian epoque he both lived through and helped define and create. His versatile, unconventional approach and enormous output brought him international acclaim.

Il côtoya la plupart des artistes qui animèrent la vie artistique de son époque. Il eut une relation durable tant amoureuse que professionnelle avec l'acteur Jean Marais. Il était également un ami personnel de la reine Élisabeth de Belgique, une grande passionnée de culture et de musique.
