  • Agony's Eye
rdfs:comment
  • Artifact •••, commit 3 (universal) This teardrop-shaped Malfean-brass weight, about as big as the last joint of a man’s thumb, dangles from a slender eighteen-inch green-jade chain with a ring at the opposite end. If squeezed fairly hard, it screams in an inhuman voice. When set up like a plumb line and allowed to swing freely, it does not hang straight down: rather, it swings towards the nearest and most intense source of suffering. Like calls to like. The more intense the pain it detects, the farther away from the vertical it hangs. If brought near the Juggernaut, for instance, it would point straight towards him with absolutely no regard for gravity. Its holder knows exactly which individual it’s pointing to.

abstract
Agony’s Eye can also be swung over a human (or other) body, giving +2 to Medicine rolls made to diagnose the source of particular pains or painful conditions. (Again, the holder knows exactly where the source of the pain is.) Effects that inflict pain-based wound penalties are even easier to deal with: any rolls made to diagnose or treat them get another +1. If the patient is suffering mental or emotional anguish more acute than the physical (ST’s discretion), the device points to the forehead or heart and is useless for physical diagnostics. Instead, it offers its bonus to attempts to treat madness or psychological conditions, or to social attacks made in relation to that particular pain. Its holder may spend 2m to specify for one scene which kind of pain (physical, mental, emotional, or even something more exotic ) it seeks out.
