The film, as depiced by del Toro, is a satirical parody of the Space Opera genre, but nonethless a serious movie on it's own. It narrates the story of a human boy adopted by aliens visiting Earth, and then the main narrative of a conflicted universe, where everything is ruled by a extremely tyrant and extremist Empire, with Overlord Khang (voiced by Fishburne )as it's ruler. The Resistance launch two robots containing their secrets for a isolated planet, where they wrongly ends up in the hands of a boy named Dan (Sangster). After Dan acknowledges the truth, he agrees to help and accompiny the last Guardian of the Universe, Tomar-Sibin (John Hurt) on a mission to infiltrate the Empire's planet-base Mordolips in order to save the universe from the empire's tirany. Del Toro begun working with the script of Apace Saga after releasing Hellboy III: The Code of the Apocalypse. He based the plot in what he named "exceptional sci-fi", mainly Star Wars, but others such as Flash Gordon, Star Trek, Metropolis and 2001: A Space Odissey. Searching someone to finance the film, del Toro was rejected inumerous times. Legendary, who worked alongside del Toro in inumerous films, produced the film, that was distribuited by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was released in conventional 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D on November 16th. The film, unlike expectations, was met with criminal acclaim and phenomenal praise, being listed as one of the best films of 2014, as well as commercial sucess, grossing over 722 Million worldwide. Much of it's praise went to the film's intelligent and high-hearted humour, del Toro's directing and the cast's acting. It was Robin Williams last film until his death in the same year.
