He served the kingdom's archmage Urtho in the war against the Adept mage Ma'ar. He was from the town of Laisfaar at Stelvi Pass. While Corani was safe in the army camp at the base of Urtho's Tower, as were his sons, his wife and the rest of his relatives were at home in Laisfaar when the town was overrun by Ma'ar's forces. Everyone knew they would have been horribly tortured and butchered by Ma'ar's men. At news that the town was lost, Corani collapsed, and was tended by Amberdrake, who helped him deal with the initial stages of his shock and grief.
