Parents Ned and Sarah and children Larry, Joe and Alice, lived in a one-room tenement in Inkerman Street before moving to Coronation Street. All of them worked at Hardcastle's Mill. Alice was fifteen in 1910 and worked as a spinner at the mill. She was very pretty but had no experience with men; she tried to touch Larry but he was disgusted at the thought. After nearly being raped by Ralph Makepiece, Alice fell for Vic Piggott and encouraged him to have his way for her on the night before he left to fight in the war. She fell pregnant and begged Vic's mother Emma for money but Emma refused to believe her baby was Vic's. Alice then turned to parents and was allowed to stay at No.9 but Ned refused to speak to her. A week after baby Ben was born, Ned told her to take her bastard child and leave. She died of TB in a London workhouse and Ben was taken into parish care.
