rdfs:comment
  • Pneumonia was a deadly disease that, as of 21.5 BBY, was unknown to galactic society but had ravaged less civilized populations, such as the Korunnai. It attacked and congested the lungs, which would cause labored respiration and wheezing. Antibiotics were used to treat this condition, as well as plethyl nitrate in some species, such as Devaronians.
  • Pneumonia is the infection of the lung, most often by bacteria, but also by virii, fungi, protozoans, and rarely helminths. Pneumonia is the 8th leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Pneumonia was an inflammation of the lungs caused by an infection. Lobar pneumonia was an infection limited to one lobe of a lung, usually caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Elias Sandoval had lobar pneumonia as a child, resulting in scarring on his lungs. This scarring was later eradicated through influence of the Omicron spores. (TOS: "This Side of Paradise" )
  • Pneumonia describes the condition where the air sacs in the lungs that normally are filled with air fill up with fluid. The fluid is usually a response by the body's immune system to the presence of an infection in the lungs in an attempt to overwhelm the infection. However, the fluid prevents the lungs from taking in air, leading to a rapid loss of lung capacity and, if untreated, eventual death. Pneumonia is often the immediate cause of death for persons with respiratory diseases, although the condition always has an underlying cause.

Even until the 1960s, pneumonia could develop rapidly and would almost always result in the death of the patient. However, the use of respirators now allow physicians to keep the patient breathing until the body can recover.

(TOS: "This Side of Paradise" ) Following an outbreak of choriocytosis aboard the USS Enterprise in 2269 was finally put under control by Doctor Leonard McCoy, he deemed the disease outbreak as being "no longer even as serious as pneumonia."
