Russ' first race came in 1951, when Russ debuted at Dayton. Starting positions in the field of thirty-one are unknown, but Russ drove his way to a mediocre 24th place effort in the race. In the early 50's, Hank raced midgets in and around the Grand Rapids area (Bigelow Field and Nunica) for Chet Mysliewic, driving the blue number 5. Chet later went on to be the very successful owner of Berlin Raceway in Marne. He was luckily able to improve in his other race, competing at Grand Rapids in 1954. Starting positions are again unknown in the field of twenty-five, but Russ completed most of the race this go round and finished 15th.
