Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges floh die Familie vom Kriegs bedrohten London nach Kalifornien. Ihre Familie gehörte der oberen Mittelschicht an, aus diesem Grund besuchte sie gute Schulen und konnte Ballett- und Reitunterricht besuchen. Bereits 1941 ergatterte die damals neunjährige ihre erste Nebenrolle als Kinderdarstellerin in dem Film There’s One Born Every Minute. Der Film floppte an den Kinokassen und ihre einzigste Zusammenarbeit mit der Filmfirma Universal Pictures. Ihr erster großer Erfolg gelang ihr im Jahr 1943 mit dem Lassie-Film Heimweh, in dem sie Priscilla die Tochter des Herzoges von Rudling verkörperte. Der MGM-Produzent Samuel Marx ermöglichte ihr einen Exklusivvertrag über sechs Filme. In zwei Filmen spielte sie kleinere Nebenrolle. 1944 bekam ihre erste große Titelrolle in den Filmdrama Kleines Mädchen, großes Herz. Aus machte die MGM-Werbeabteilung das kleine Mädchen von nebenan. Ihre letzte Kinderrolle spielte sie in dem Lassie-Film Lassie – Held auf vier Pfoten aus dem Jahr 1946. Es folgten die Teenagerjahre, in der sie das junge Teenagermädchen verkörperte. Filme wie Unser Leben mit Vater (1947), Die unvollkommene Dame (1948) und Kleine tapfere Jo (1949) markieren ihren Wechsel in die Teenierollen. Aus dem jungen Teenager wurde langsam aber sicher eine junge und erwachsene Frau mit viel Sexappeal. Ihre Rolle als Frau konnten die Film- und Werbeexperten noch nicht wirklich einordnen. Viele damalige Kinderstars wie Shirley Temple waren nach der Pubertät nicht mehr gefragt. Beinahe hätte sie das gleiche Schicksal ereilt, 1949 spielte sie erstmals die Rolle der Leading Lady in dem Film Verschwörer. Allerdings gilt dieser Film als Kurisoum, da er weder vom Publikum noch von den Kritikern akzeptiert wurde. Er wurde dem Arthousekino zugerechnet. Auch ein weiterer Film floppte. 1948 lieh sich die Filmfirma Paramount Liz Taylor und mit dem Film Ein Platz an der Sonne wurde aus ihr ein richtiger Star. 1950 spielte sie in dem Film Vater der Braut die Tochter von Spencer Tracy, die unbedingt heiraten möchte und ihren Vater von einer Katastrophe in die nächste stürzte. Der Film wurde so erfolgreich und populär, dass ein Sequel mit dem Namen Ein Geschenk des Himmels folgte. Im Mai 1950 heiratete sie tatsächlich nämlich den Hotel-Erben Nicky Hilton, die Ehe wurde kurz später wieder geschieden. Es folgten Filme wie Ivanhoe – Der schwarze Ritter (1952), Ein verwöhntes Biest (1953), Elefantenpfad (1954) und Beau Brummell (1954). Der Film Die Katze auf dem heißen Blechdach (1958) ermöglicht ihr den Zutritt zu komplexeren Rollen und zu besseren Engagements. 1963 landete sie in den Olymp der Hollywood-Diven mit dem späteren Filmklassiker Cleopatra. Der Film wurde von Papst Johannes XXIII. und Radio Vatikan besonders heftig und scharf kritisiert. Auch der Film Giganten mit James Dean und Rock Hudson gehört zu den weiteren großen Filmen ihrer Karriere. 1964 heiratete sie Richard Burton und ließ sich von ihm nach 8 Jahren wieder scheiden. Es folgte eine nochmalige Hochzeit mit dem Hollywoodschauspieler wenig später. Beide traten in zahlreichen Filmen gemeinsam auf, wobei sie immer wieder Nebenrollen wie für Filme wie Doktor Faustus (1967) und Königin für tausend Tage (1969) annahm. Der Avantgardefilm Brandung aus dem Jahr 1968 zeigte sie von einer ganz anderen Seite, sie war laut und vulgär. Daraufhin folgten zahlreiche Filme in der sie sich von dieser Seite zeigte. 1972 zog sie sich langsam aus dem Kinofilmgeschäft zurück, sie war zwar noch in einigen Kinofilmen wie Mord im Spiegel (1980), Il giovane Toscanini (1988) und Flintstones – Die Familie Feuerstein (1994), aber für ihre eigentliche Rolle als Leading Lady wurde sie nach Hollywood Maßstäben zu alt. Sie übernahm einige Fernsehrollen und Synchronrollen wie unter anderem bei der Serie die Simpsons. Sie wendete sich anderen wichtigen Themen wie der Versöhnung im Kalten Krieg und der Bekämpfung von AIDS zu. Elizabeth Taylor lebte zuletzt in Bel Air, Kalifornien.
