  • Auschwitzin nimellä oli kaiken kaikkiaan kolme eri keskitysleiriä: * KL Auschwitz I - pääleiri, jonka rakentaminen alkoi toukokuussa 1940 lähelle Oświęcimin keskustaa. Nykyään alue on museona. * KL Auschwitz II - Auschwitz-Birkenau, varsinainen tuhoamisleiri, jonka rakennustyöt aloitettiin lokakuussa 1941.

  • Auschwitz (Swedish for "Ausweg", or "Resort") was the most popular of a chain of holiday and summer camps founded by German entrepreneur Adolf Eichmann in 1940. Adverts for Auschwitz ran in numerous media outlets in German-occupied Europe throughout the early 1940s. Accompanied by the memorable 'strangled cry' jingle, Auschwitz adverts stressed the camp’s dedicated staff, direct train service and its all-season hot and cold running showers.
  • When Peter claims that Lois is always tricking him into going places that he doesn't want to visit in "Hot Pocket-Dial", a cutaway shows them at the gates of Auschwitz, as Lois points out that Walt Disney supported such constructs. A wider view shows the Disney World-style opening used by Walt Disney Pictures since 2006, but instead of the theme park's trains, a transport train appears as Lois warns Peter to stay off the train ride.
  • Auschwitz is the name of the greatly feared German concentration camp that was located in the city of Oswiecim in Poland. This site is now known for the extermination of over one million European Jews and Poles. The main camp had three smaller sub camps: * Auschwitz I- which was the original concentration camp and the site of the deaths of around 70,000 people, mostly Poles and Soviet prisoners of war. * Auschwitz II (Birkenau)- an extermination camp in which over 1.1 million Jews, Poles and Gypsies were murdered * Auschwitz III (Monowitz)- work camp.
  • After the start of World War II, Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), the chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, implemented a policy that came to be known as the “Final Solution.” Hitler was determined not just to isolate Jews in Germany and countries annexed by the Nazis, subjecting them to dehumanizing regulations and random acts of violence. Instead, he became convinced that his “Jewish problem” would be solved only with the elimination of every Jew in his domain, along with artists, educators, Gypsies, communists, homosexuals, the mentally and physically handicapped and others deemed unfit for survival in Nazi Germany.

The camp was run by the SS. It was the home to the brutal German doctor Dr. Josef Mengele. When the camp first began many Poles were sent there to either work to death, be an experimental subject for Dr. J osef Mengele, or to just rot away. Later in the war the Nazis started sending Russians and other people who opposed them in the slightest way. The camp is infamous for its gas chambers, where the Nazis used Zyklon B to exterminate over 75,000 people, and crematoria which were then used to dispose of the bodies. The gas chamber and the crematoria, which were formerly a Polish army bunker, are still standing today. Towards the end of the war the Nazis had to cover up all the murders committed there; they evacuated all the men who could walk and forced them into the last defenses of Germany. But it was not all hidden. 7,500 prisoners were liberated by the 322nd Infantry unit of the Red Army on January 27 1945, exposing the brutality of the Nazi regime. The mass murders committed at Auschwitz represented a scale of horror unprecedented in human history and not seen ever since.

To complete this mission, Hitler ordered the construction of death camps. Unlike concentration camps, which had existed in Germany since 1933 and were detention centers for Jews, political prisoners and other perceived enemies of the Nazi state, death camps existed for the sole purpose of killing Jews and other “undesirables,” in what became known as the Holocaust.
