Diligence described him as "a great barrel of a man" with "pendulous jowls", and cataracts had clouded his eyes. He moved slowly, often supported by one of his grandchildren. In the tea room, he sprawled in a vast, cushioned chair. When Alacrity was murdered on the day they were scheduled to leave, Paddifraw allowed them to stay another night for a fraction of the regular tariff.
