  • The Wood Elves, known as the Asrai in some tales,[1c] or as the Fay Folk of Athel Loren,[2a] are a reclusive, secretive and highly isolationist race of Elves that have long ago voluntarily split off from the rest of their kin, preferring instead to live out their lives in Nature's embrace beneath the enchanted forested canopy of Athel Loren. From here, they have learnt to dwell in concord with the seasons and the weave of life and death that binds all living things together. They are the defenders of the forest, guardians of all things natural and pure. For millennia, the Wood Elves have lived in this state of harmony, lying in wait and hidden from the prying eyes of the wider World.[1a] Yet times have changed since that ancient age, and the Wood Elves realize that the fate of Athel Loren is now tied to that of other lands. Though they do not seek to act as the world’s protectors as do the High Elves, nor enthronen themselves as its rulers as do the Dark Elves, there are those times when the will of Orion and Ariel, the King and Queen in the Woods, must shape the fortunes of those that live beyond the boundary of their homelands.[1a] As such, the Wood Elves have spent their entire existence bent solely on the preservation of their forested realms, to ensure that it persist throughout the ages and to protect their demi-god rulers from all harms. Never has this been truer than in these dark days, where every broken bough or withered leaf carries an omen of darker times to come.[1a] It is this cause in which they fight, for no land endures long if it cannot take up arms against those that wish it harm, and the waking woodland of Athel Loren have endured for many thousands of years, so long as the watchful eyes of her protectors continue their loyal vigilance.[1b]
  • The Wood Elves, distant cousins of the High Elves, lived a disciplined and structured life in the great woodlands. The most common of all the Elven races, they were also the finest archers and foresters in the world. The Wood Elves studied and worshiped nature and considered themselves the protectors of the forests. The Elves were great hunters with both spear and bow but only killed animals for needed food. Wood Elves cared little for material things and preferred a simple life, though they held valor and courage very dear. Being mostly nomadic, only a few large Wood Elf communities existed; these communities surrounded magical herbs growths. Their strongest male warrior often ruled them, and this king had absolute power in the realms of politics and warfare. However, the oldest female of each tribe was named ElvenEye, and it was she who had complete control over the formatting of laws that dealt with day-to-day existence. The ElvenEye was also judge and jury in trials of criminal or civil injustices. Justice was quick and often harsh. Wood Elves were often very religious, following the ways of Sorn, Canter, or Allanbay. They rarely entered the priesthood and sometimes had a human priest within their clan to oversee religious matters. Wood Elves were most often found in the Ear Vexia, Cear Vexia, and Mar Vexia forests. Though they usually worshiped Gods of good alignment, they commonly had a more neutral outlook on life. However, they tended to be singleminded and follow a idea or conviction to it's fullest. Deeds spoke out in this community. Wood Elven men had tattoos around their wrist and arms to signify their, or their forefather's, honorable deeds. These tattoos, called Bands of the Soul, were used to determine stature within their nomadic community. The Elves of the Mar Vexia region were fine traders and have established caravan routes from ocean to ocean. They sometimes came into conflicts with their High Elf brothers over the slave trading that the Wood elves were occasionally involved. Wood elves did not commonly enslave people or use slaves, but they saw no problem in trading in them just as any other commodity. Some Wood elves worked as scouts for the Greystone, and Westwall Citystates. The Elves of Cear Vexia Forest were said to be immortal, though it was commonly known that they could be killed in combat. Other Sages said that a magical pond existed within their realm, which held waters with powers of restoration and healing. Whatever the case, Warlords always saw Cear Vexia as a prime target. But the elves of Cear Vexia were apt at defending their home; only once was it captured and then only for a short period. Most Wood Elven Warriors came from Cear Vexia, often questing for 'Bands of the Soul'.
  • Inhabitants of Athel Loren are mysterious and secretive beings, rarely straying beyond their woodland home. When danger threatens, Elves and forest fight as one, both deadly and unforgiving in defence of their borders. Swift and silent, the unparalleled archers of the Wood Elves ruthlessly cut down intruders before vanishing like ghosts. For centuries this alliance of Elf and Forest Spirit has defeated incursions of warped Beastmen , vile-ratmen and power hungry men. The Wood Elves (known as "Asrai" to themselves) were once members of the High Elves, the original group of elves in the Warhammer world. Setting sail from their homeland of Ulthuan, an island-continent in the ocean to the west, the High Elves colonised the lands later inhabited by men, including the forest of Athel Loren. After many years of peaceful existence, these colonists came into conflict with the Dwarves , a conflict which escalated into open war. Known as the War of the Beard (Dwarves sometimes call it the War of Vengeance), this centuries long conflict saw Dwarven forces through Athel Loren, felling trees to fuel their furnaces, and to spite the nature loving Elves. Some Elven colonists took to the woods to prevent this destruction, ambushing the Dwarven forces when possible. Eventually the High Elves, after the death of Caledor II and with the Dark Elf invasion of Ulthuan, made the decision to retreat back to their homeland to its defense. However many of the colonists felt little loyalty towards that distant land and, having formed a bond with the woods of Athel Loren, chose to remain. They became known as the Wood Elves. Over time the forest's other inhabitants, spirits such as dryads, treemen and spites, have come to accept the elves, although some such as the branchwraith Drycha still resent their presence, and parts of the wood, such as the Wildwood, still remain closed to them. The Wood Elves have learnt to wield Athel Loren as a weapon against invaders, leading invaders down magical pathways to wander for centuries, only re-appearing many years later before quickly ageing and dying. Such 'tree-singing' is also used to form great cities in the trees, cities which few outsiders are ever permitted to see. The Wood Elves cannot be described as morally 'good' or 'bad', lacking the clear definition of their cousins, the High Elves and Dark Elves. Despite this, Wood Elves are counted amongst the "Forces of Order" in the current rules. Like nature itself, they can appear as fickle and capricious as the winter chill, yet also as warm as the summer sun. Athel Loren, the enchanted forest of the Wood Elves, is ruled by two powerful elves called Ariel and Orion who are possessed by deities which are manifestations of aspects of nature. Ariel being the peaceful regenerative representation of nature, and Orion is the warlike unpredictable side. A Wood Elven army is made of two major groups: Elven soldiers, and the forest itself. 'Forest Spirits' can and will be awakened in a time of need to fight for the well-being of the entire forest. These Forest Spirits usually take the form of leafy tree-like creatures (called Dryads, Tree Kin and ). Dryads present themselves as lithe and lovely maidens who entice the unwary into entering the forest. At a time that the dryads find amusing, the lovely, near-human aspect is shed and the violent aspect manifests as a tree-like vengeful monster that tears the erstwhile guest to shreds. Dryads are able to shape-shift into different forms, often mimicking the appearance of Elves, appearing as unearthly, lithe and beautiful maidens. In battle, they take on their war-aspect, with distorted limbs, features and vicious wooden talons capable of rending and impaling their foes. On the battlefield, the Dryads skirmishing, fear causing style of battle means allows them to flank any unsuspecting units and see them running for their lives. Tree Kin are more nebulous spirits that normally move freely through the forest, unbound to any physical instrumentality. When the need arises, however, the Tree Kin embody a collection of dead limbs and trunks, which then shambles along with the elven horde, smashing and crushing all that it meets. Most terrible of all the forest spirits, however, is the, which results when an exalted spirit makes the choice to bind itself permanently to a tree. The resulting creature lives for centuries: indeed, the eldest of, the Ancients, recall a time when the meaty nuisances of elves and men, orcs and dwarfs, did not trouble and pollute (and, worst of all, cut down) the forest. Also found in the forest are 'Spites'- the lowest form of spirits Athel Loren has to offer, who attach themselves to a unit, place or character and which confer a wide variety of unusual benefits. When Athel Loren goes to war, the nobles of the Wood Elves will direct the efforts of its armies, often commanding a varied yet lethal assortment of Elves and Forest spirits. The Highborn warriors will fiercely defend their realm, leading their army into battle according to the teachings of their host kindred. Whichever path they choose to follow, a Wood Elf Highborn will dispatch their foes with ruthless efficiency, and by any means necessary, to protect the woodland realm.
