  • The Grappling Hook is a recurring item in the Legend of Zelda series. Despite its similarity in name to the Hookshot, the two items function very differently, perhaps more so in the Grappling Hook's first appearance than the second. This has been known to cause confusion to players. The Grappling Hook has different functions in different games; however, it usually allows Link to either hook himself onto small outcroppings on walls to transport himself over deep holes or to pull items towards him.

You can apply a grappling hook to a location up to one square away to achieve various effects: grabbing an item on that square, dragging yourself to a spot (or out of a trap), dragging a small monster to you, or accidentally hitting yourself (doing 10-19 points of damage). The effect that occurs is randomly chosen, unless you are at least skilled in flail; in this case, you may choose one of the first three effects to attempt. If skilled in flail, you have a 50% chance of getting your choice; if expert, you have a 95% chance of getting your choice.

This gadget is one of the common features equipped to Tony's Iron Man suits, first seen in The Avengers from Iron Man. • According to the Bansenshukai shinobi manual, spikes erected along the edges of castle walls would be ripped down by grappling hooks or ropes. These spikes were called shinobi-gaeshi, they were intended to keep shinobi from climbing over. The Giyoshu manual's grappling hook has the rope running through bamboo tubes. Shinobi would carry a long cord with them and attach it to a doorway or exit. The cord would be reeled out behind the agent as to not lose his way in the castle or mansion he's infiltrating. When he's done or simply needs to escape he would follow the cord back out.

  • The Grappling Hook is an incredibly useful and practical tool, used to grab on to surfaces. It can be used on all solid surfaces and is helpful for navigating caves and building homes as you can use it to cut vegetation. It does not need to be placed in the hotbar to be used as it has a designated hotkey, (default is E [LT on Xbox]) and, after pressing, the grappling hook will be fired in the direction of the mouse. However, it does have a limited range. It can grab onto a Wood Platform.

It can allow the Attackers to rappel up walls to reach windows or the roof. While rappelling, players have freedom of movement on the surface they are climbing on and can also hang upside-down for new angles of approach. Players can use their weapons and equipment while rappeling, but shield users will stow their shield while hanging.
  • A grappling hook is part of the Climber's kit. It otherwise has no official description by itself.[PH:222] * Price: 1 gp * Weight: 4 lb. The thrown range of the grappling hook is 5/10 squares, per the Improvised weapon rules, and the target AC would generally be 5 for it to catch hold (equivalent of a medium-sized object). It doesn't give direct combat benefit without an associated power, and is thus effective only for direct damage. In Aerial Battles, the grappling hook was given a usable ability, designed to be used to lock aerial ships together.[Du180:67] Throw Grapple At-Will (Special)

While the gadget known as grappling hook ( and grappling hook gun's) do exist, in comic books they have an additional fantastic properties, such as the ability to reach extremely high or long distances, a extremely resistant rope and hook that can lift people, an unusual long rope (usually compared to the size of the gun) and sometimes even to pull things towards the gun instead of doing the opposite; a good example of this could be Batman. Despite that fact Alan Moore, trying to give some sort of realistic sensation to his novel, shows Rorschach grappling hook more as a normal hook than one we would expect in a superhero comic book, its a gas powered hook gun which he uses to climb up to Edward Blake's apartment, shooting the hook up and climbing up the rope, instead of the gun lifting him up to the apartment, and once to shoot a cop. The only things that can be said to be abnormal about the hook is the fact that Rorschach carries it in his trench coat and the rope is still long enough to reach a 20th floor of a building (and some people might also question the fact that he shoots someone with the hook only, while the rope doesn't moves at all).

These spikes were called shinobi-gaeshi, they were intended to keep shinobi from climbing over. The Giyoshu manual's grappling hook has the rope running through bamboo tubes. Natori Masatake states in Shoninki shinobi manual that it could be used to retrain and tie someone up, to lock a sliding door, to climb, and much more. In the text, he mentions a thin rope called konawa, and how his school passes down, through oral tradition, a secret technique which uses this rope. Although he did not write down the technique, he does mention that the konawa could be attached to the saddle of a horse if needed. Shinobi would carry a long cord with them and attach it to a doorway or exit. The cord would be reeled out behind the agent as to not lose his way in the castle or mansion he's infiltrating. When he's done or simply needs to escape he would follow the cord back out. Portable bridges and temporary structures were used to cross rivers and bridges. The shinobi's task was to discover the length , width, and dept of a moat and report the dimensions, or to cross it in secret at night.

However, it does have a limited range. It can grab onto a Wood Platform. You may use other tools at the same time as you are grappled onto a wall, but note that destroying the block you are attached to will break the connection causing you to let go and fall. If connecting to a mud block in mid-air you will keep taking damage. Grappling hooks can be used to pass through a chokepoint that you would not normally fit through. The endpoint still needs to be at least 3 blocks high and 2 blocks wide, but you can pass though a more narrow gap to get there. As an example, face left in a three block high, horizontal tunnel. Dig the two blocks above your head on the left, and the three to the left of that, starting with your head level, and the two above. You will not be able to jump through that gap, but you can grapple through it. The grappling hook is an absolute necessity for mining and exploring, and is a massive help as it helps players reach heights and areas otherwise impossible to reach. Players can also use it for quick escapes from water and mobs alike. As an added perk, by firing the grappling hook at the ground while falling, fall damage can be negated; however, it should be noted that the grappling hook should be fired about 2 seconds before impact, or else the grapple will not hit the block before you do.
