  • The World Within is the third scenario in The World Tree, the fifth part of Heroes Chronicles. On their way to find the World Tree, Tarnum and the barbarian tribe come across a large cavern with trees, grass, and flowers, despite the fact that they are deep underground and there's no sunlight or rain here. Even the shaman Addar has never heard about anything like this, but he guesses that it's due to the influence of the World Tree. Tarnum learns that the Followers of Vorr are led by a barbarian named King Targor, who patterns himself on the mythical Barbarian Tyrant who destroyed the Wizard-Kings of Bracaduun. Tarnum, who was that Barbarian Tyrant, wonders how to stop Targor and his followers, since he doesn't want to kill them. Addar suggests that if they can get the Followers of Vorr to stop their worship, Vorr will lose the power he gained from them, and it'll be possible to defeat him. Grumba wants to kill them all, but Addar says that if they can change King Targor's mind, his subjects will follow. Tarnum sends Grumba to find the Pendant of Total Recall, planning to use it to show King Targor his memories. "Let him see my pain, my crimes, my sorrow. Let him see first hand what the Tyrant was really like, and then let him decide if he wants his people to follow Vorr." Grumba finds the Pendant, but his force is too small to fight through the enemy to return with it, so he instead prepares for Tarnum's arrival. Addar passes away in his sleep. The endless marching was too much for the old man, but Tarnum knew that he couldn't send him back to the surface without hurting his pride. They bury him with all the honors of the greatest Barbarian warrior.
