In the present day, the hero's wife, Charles' grandmother, believes that Charles, the current Zone Leader, is not living up to her husband's honour and is a coward. Whilst investigating supernatural goings-on in the mines, Charles accompanied Tails but ended up separated from him. Tails was forced to battle an oversized spider, although he appeared to receive some assistance from the suddenly braver Charles. Tails teamed-up with "Charles" after he ripped spider's web from his tails and executed his plan to tangle the spider up, impaling it on a crystal. Later, after the mission was successful, Tails moved to thank Charles for his part, but learned that he had been nowhere near the action. A shellshocked Tails did not relay his thoughts, although it was likely that he was helped by Charles' grandfather, identical in appearance to his grandson.
