Nach aktuellem Stand (2013) wird sich die Schweiz in der Sache so einigen, dass Ägypten das Recht zugesprochen wird, seine Staatsoberhäupter in einem Tunnel unter dem Matterhorn zu begraben. Ein ähnlicher Rechtsstreit mit den Maya wurde im berühmten Schiedsspruch von Den Haag (2. April 1506) beigelegt. Da es nicht hohl ist, kann man in das Matterhorn auch nicht hineinblasen, obwohl dies viele deutsche Touristen wünschen.
