Mr Toad in some countries, whilst retaining the title The Wind in the Willows in others. The series stars Sir David Jason as Toad, Sir Michael Hordern as Badger, Peter Sallis as Rat (replacing Ian Carmichael who voiced Rat in the original 1983 film), and Richard Pearson as Mole. Ian Carmichael remained in the series, re-cast as the narrator. The series is set in Riverbank, a mythical location somewhere in Berkshire. The Riverbank is where Ratty, Mole and Toad live near there is the Wild Wood where Badger and the Wily Weasels live. Each episode has a unique story line, although there are some common themes running throughout the series. In series 4 The humans start building a new railway that is about to be built through the area where the animals live. The show teaches children about the destruction of forests and animals natural habits. The railway gets closer and closer to the animals homes yet in the episode Happy New Year it turns out that the railway would be travelling under unsuitable land therefore abadoning the route from the riverbank & wild wood areas. Stone Roses guitarist John Squire worked on this series for Cosgrove Hall. The popular theme song - based on the instrumental theme to the original film - was sung by British singer-songwriter Ralph McTell.

Alternately slow moving and fast paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animal characters in a pastoral version of England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie. The Wind in the Willows was in its thirty-first printing when then-famous playwright, A. A. Milne, who loved it, adapted a part of it for stage as Toad of Toad Hall in 1929. In 1908 Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England. He moved to the country, where he spent his time by the River Thames doing much as the animal characters in his book do; namely, as one of the most famous phrases from the book says, "simply messing about in boats".

He eventually finds himself at the river, which he has never seen before, and meets the water rat Ratty who takes him for a boat ride. Mole and ratty quickly become friends. Ratty invites Mole to stay with him and teaches him how to row a boat, how to swim and the ways of the river. In the summer Ratty takes Mole to Toad Hall, the home of the wealthy Mr. Toad. Mr.Toad is a cheerful and friendly character but is also vain and boastful. He becomes completely obsessed with one hobby for a short while before completely losing interest in it and moving on to something else. Before the start of the novel, Toad had been keen on boating but he has given that up and bought a horse-drawn caravan. Toad persuades the reluctant Ratty and Mole to join him on a journey in the caravan. The journey is cut short when the caravan crashes because a car frightens the horse. However, the crash leads to Toad's new obsession with cars. Mole wants to visit Ratty's friend Badger who lives in the Wild Wood. Ratty does not want to take him there because he knows that Badger does not like visitors. Mole decides to go to the Wild Wood by himself in the hope of meeting Badger but gets hopelessly lost. Ratty goes out looking for Mole but he becomes lost in the snowy Wild Wood too. By chance, the two friends end up at Badger's house. Badger invites them in and gives them warm clothes. Badger tells the two friends that Toad has already crashed six cars and been to hospital three times. Mole, Ratty and Badger agree that Toad has to be saved from himself. In the spring Badger, Ratty and Mole go to Toad Hall. They try to persuade Toad to give up his obsession with cars but do not have any success. They decide instead to prevent Toad from leaving his own house. However, Toad pretends to be sick and escapes when Mole goes to fetch a doctor. He steals a car, is caught and sentenced to twenty years in prison. The jailer's daughter befriends Toad and helps him to escape dressed as an old washerwoman. Toad is helped in his escape by a train driver who takes pity on him and, still disguised as an old washerwoman, he is able to bluff his way on board a canal boat and into a car. He insists on driving the car, which he crashes, but is able to make his way back to Ratty's home. Toad learns that while he has been away the weasels, stoats and ferrets from the Wild Wood have taken over Toad Hall. Toad, Ratty and Badger sneak into Toad Hall through a secret entrance. Fight off the ferrets, stoats and weasels and take back Toad's ancestral home. Toad sends money to all those who helped him and all those who he wronged. He promises to change his ways and never cause any trouble again.

His friends, Ratty (Water Rat), Moley (Mole) and Angus MacBadger try to talk some sense into him but Toad quickly discovers the newfangled motor car and is determined to get one by any means necessary. Toad is charged with car theft after trading the deed to Toad Hall for a car belonging to Mr. Winkie the tavernkeeper and his gang of weasels and thrown in jail when Winky testifies that Toad tried to sell him a stolen car (which his weasel bandits actually stole and framed him). On Christmas Eve, Cyril visits Toad in disguise and assists him in escaping. Toad manages to find Ratty and Moley and they are informed by MacBadger that the evil Winky and his weasels have taken over Toad Hall. With his friends' aid, Toad redeems his good name by recovering the deed to the estate from the very hands of its captors. Toad, touched by the loyalty and kindness of his friends, promises to reform. Ratty, Moley and MacBadger give a toast to the new Toad at their New Year celebration but are shocked to find Toad now recklessly flying a 1908 biplane along with Cyril.
