McDuffie returned to the series in 1982, driving once again at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Despite starting last (30th) in the field, McDuffie completed 377 of the 400 laps in route to a career-best 16th place showing. After another long haitus, McDuffie returned to Cup in late 1985, running at Rockingham. Starting 33rd in the forty-car field, McDuffie completed 445 of the 492 laps in route to a respectable 23rd place effort. Though McDuffie had shown talent and consistency behind some under-funded efforts, McDuffie never got a ride in the series again.
