  • Capillary
rdfs:comment
  • Capillaries are the smallest of the body's blood vessels, which normally connect the arteries to the veins by way of arterioles and venules. Capillaries enable the interchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and many other nutrient and waste chemical substances between blood and surrounding tissues.
  • When a patient is bleeding, most of the blood is released from capilliaries, which are closest to the surface of the body and the body's organs. However, certain diseases can cause capilliaries to break down without external damage. This usually leads to internal bleeding and obvious bruising(contusions). Certain conditions cause clotting in the capilliaries, most notably Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • In 2154, Arik Soong told Jeremy Lucas that the capillaries of Cold Station 12's Deputy Director were bursting after exposure to Symbalene blood burn. (ENT: "Cold Station 12") In 2365, during Captain Jean-Luc Picard's cardiac implant replacement surgery, the surgeon noted that there had been some capillary reaction and the surgical team needed to proceed carefully. (TNG: "Samaritan Snare" ) In 2370, when Juliana Tainer was found to be a Soong-type android, she was discovered to have capillaries underneath her skin. (TNG: "Inheritance" )

(TNG: "Samaritan Snare" ) In 2368, Doctor Beverly Crusher warned Geordi La Forge that once the air had been vented from a cargo bay they were about to depressurize, some of the capillaries on exposed sections of their skin might burst. (TNG: "Disaster" ) In 2370, when Juliana Tainer was found to be a Soong-type android, she was discovered to have capillaries underneath her skin. (TNG: "Inheritance" ) Later that year, Reginald Barclay anxiously informed Crusher that he thought his capillaries were shrinking. (TNG: "Genesis" ) In 2372, the capillaries in Jake Sisko's cerebral cortex dilated 20 percent, due to Onaya's stimulation of his brain. (DS9: "The Muse") In 2374, Seven of Nine noticed that the capillaries in Tom Paris's eyes were swollen (actually an identity thief), leading her to believe that he was intoxicated. (VOY: "Vis à Vis") When Species 8472 imitated Humans and recreated Starfleet Command, their simulations were indiscernible from the real thing. The Doctor scanned the David Gentry-impersonator, finding no difference down to the capillaries. (VOY: "In the Flesh") In 2377, The Doctor observed that whenever Seven of Nine mentioned Axum's name, the blood flow increased to her facial capillaries, which indicated she had formed an emotional attachment to him. (VOY: "Unimatrix Zero, Part II")
