Starting 18th in the field of twenty-eight, Elmore kept his nose clean at the bullring and was rewarded with a solid 15th place run as a result, a finish that would prove to be his career best. Elmore had to wait until 1983 to compete again in the series, but ran well again in Ulrich's equipment. Elmore returned to Nashville for his season debut, finishing 18th there. He struggled a bit at Pocono, finishing 22nd, but rebounded for a 19th place showing at Talladega and 16th at Bristol to round out his career. Despite having little experience and racing at some tough tracks, Elmore was impressive in the regard that he was running at the finish of all five of his career starts, recording four top-twenty runs as a result.
