rdfs:comment | - The Smith and Wesson Model 39 was a semi-automatic pistol developed for the US Army service pistol trials of 1954. After the Army abandoned its search for a new pistol, the Model 39 went on the civilian market in 1955 and was the first of Smith & Wesson's first generation semi-automatic pistols. Used by the Illinois State Police and the US Navy SEALs, it was a groundbreaking pistol for use with the military and law-enforcement agencies.
- Among the first semi-automatic pistols to be developed by Smith & Wesson, the Smith and Wesson Model 39 was also the first double-action pistol chambered in 9mm Parabellum to be produced in the United States, starting in 1954. The Model 39 was a recoil-operated, locked-breech pistol with adjustable sights. The Model 39 was finished in factory black with chequered grips. it also has a stainless-steel counterpart, the Model 639, albeit with a modified trigger guard.
- The Model 39 was designed as a potential replacement for the Colt M1911A1 in United States military service. It was the first American-designed double action pistol to be marketed in the United States, behind the German-made Walther P38. Although it never won any major military contracts, the pistol did see limited use with special forces units during the Vietnam War.
