The Grand Prix is hosted and funded by the Grand Pricks, a society of bored old men close to death, led by Bernie Ecclestone. Together they put up the prizes which the races are ultimately held for, including the Urine Shield and contributions to the Pension Top-up fund. Originating in Mediocre Britain, the Grand Prix has slowly gained worldwide status and is now held in most of the uncivilized nations around the galaxy.

Push block 1 U 4L, teleport, push the green button, push block 2 U, press the green button, then push block 2 U 3L and down. Use the lower recessed walls to push the block through the tanks and onto trap button 1. Teleport and collect the fire boots, move the block onto button 2, and collect the green key. Now move the block onto button 3 to collect the yellow key, then back onto button 1. Now bring block 1 down the leftmost column to R of the trap by the teleport. Go through the green door, through the pink balls, and into the teleport, to push block 1 right. Move it through the ice and into the bug room. Leave it 2R of the right-pointing force floor, which will cause 2 bugs to join together and cause the third bug to explode bomb 3. Pushing the block 2R D will force the bugs to explode the other bombs. Collect the chips and press the green button, then push the block back through the ice, and move it to D from the top force floor. Move block 2 R, then go back to the top. Go through the green walls and down into the teleport, pushing block 1 2D. Press the green button, open the yellow door, and push the block onto the trap. Taking care not to be hit by a fireball, press the brown button (the block will slide out of the trap as it slid in). Push it 2R U onto the force loop, then push it U off the leftmost left-pointing force floor, then move it L 3U (so it is U from the start). Bring block 1 through the bottom part in similar fashion, and push it to the start space. Push block 2 R (onto the ice) then immediately push block 1 U (to trap block 2). Block 2 can now be pushed across the water to collect the last chip and blue key. Now push block 1 3L, press the green button at the bottom, then return anticlockwise to block 1. Push it back through the level (using the other 2 recessed walls on the left side), allowing it to be pushed across the other water tile to reach the exit.

The racer who has the most points after the final track is the winner. In the first 3 games, if the player did not rank 4th or higher, they lost a life and had to redo the track. In every Mario Kart game released so far, winning in this mode is the primary method of unlocking hidden content. For Super Mario Kart, this mode unlocked a now-standard engine class and the now-standard Special Cup. For Mario Kart 64, this mode unlocked the "Extra" engine class. Winning in this mode in Super Circuit unlocked the Extra Tracks. In Mario Kart DS, and Mario Kart Wii, this mode unlocked karts/bikes, Mirror Mode, some new cups, and extra racers. Additionally Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, more Battle Mode courses can be unlocked. In Mario Kart 7, and Mario Kart 8, only characters and cups can be unlocked (vehicle parts were unlocked by collecting coins). Also, winning the entire Grand Prix in every engine class in every Mario Kart game after 64 will unlock an alternate title screen, with changes ranging from minor (a palette change in Super Circuit) to complete (Double Dash!!'s version). However, in Mario Kart Wii and onward, players wishing to unlock the next cup in an engine class only have to place 3rd or better.

The "cc" refers to the power of the vehicles, with 50 being the slowest. Once you beat all the 50cc and 100cc Grand Prixes, which allow only karts and bikes respectively, you can switch them to race using either vehicle type. This is advantageous because you can use your favorite vehicle to get a high ranking (see below). Once you complete all four courses in the specific cup, you are given an award and a rank. Both are extremely important if you want to unlock additional courses, characters, and vehicles. You recieve a Gold Trophy if you finish first. You recieve a Silver Trophy if you finish in second. You recieve a Bronze Trophy if you finish in third. You recieve a key holder if you finish in fourth or lower.
