Married to Carry on actress Dilys Laye, he appeared in the programme as Alan Mather in 1963 and then went on to pen 5 episodes of Coronation Street between June 1979 and June 1980. A prolific bit-part actor in many British television dramas over three decades, he also wrote for popular ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm. He is one of seven people to both act in and write for the programme, the others being Stephen Mallatratt, S. Keith James, Alick Hayes, Ray H. Dunbobbin, Bob Mason and Martyn Hesford.
