Filmen er oprindeligt udsendt i 1980 og har vist sig at være én af de mest populære film i serien blandt fans og kritiker. Filmen blev genudsendt med ændringer i 1997 og (på DVD) i 2004. Den blev endnu engang genudgivet på Blu-ray i september 2011. En radioudgave blev sendt på National Public Radio USA i 1983. I 2010 blev filmen valgt til at blive bevaret af Kongressens bibliotek som en del af dets National Film Registry. Filmen handler om de igangværende kampe mellem Rebellerne og Det Galaktiske Imperie. Undervejs i filmen bliver Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Prinsesse Leia Organa forfulgt gennem rummet af Darth Vader og hans elitetropper. I mellemtiden begynder Luke Skywalker hans Jedi training hos Yoda efter en instruktion fra Obi-Wan Kenobis spøgelse. I en følelsesladet og næsten skæbnessvanger konfrontation med Vader præsenteres Luke for en rædselsvækkende åbenbaring og må møde sin skæbne.
