He journeyed with his team to Onu-Kavaka, where their Toa stones were supposedly kept, in the Forgotten Keep of Darkmaze Canyon. In the depths of the mines beneath the canyon, they met a horrific looking being, which they knew from Onu-Matoran stories as the Rahi known as Obitil-Olur. They panicked at first, and threatened him, but the being revealed himself to be a sapient, and called himself Toxmaq, though he could remember little of his history other than living in peace and harmony with the subterranian Rahi in the darkness. When Tekint asked him to help them, he agreed, and guided them to the keep. Inside the keep, Toxmaq touched Oreolta's Toa stone, and fell unconscious. The six Matoran, including Kariko, used their Toa stones, and became the Toa Kavaka. After Toxmaq woke up, he told them he had had a vision of his past, so he now knew he was a Toa Hordika, and had once been a Toa of Earth. He explained he had to find his surviving team mate and Keetongu to restore him to his former self, then flew out of the keep, leaving the six new Toa.

This made her a powerful shinobi and under the tutelage of Orochimaru and other henchmen, she learned how to master her two kekkei genkai as well as the Gift of the Hermit Group chakra by recalling her teachings from the ninja monks. This mastery allowed her to become one of Orochimaru's most powerful shinobi in only a few years. Due to her extraordinary capabilities, Orochimaru keeps her as a personal bodyguard during important travels and a right hand to him. Eventually she would be appointed the new leader of the reformed Sound Five, being called the Golden Dragon of the group, possibly a reference to her skills in Senzokujutsu.
