It was the assassination of Franz Joseph's nephew and heir presumptive, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, on June 28, 1914, that led to World War I. Franz Joseph did not live to see the end of the war, or the collapse of his empire.

This murder sparked a conflict that would eventually develop into World War I; however, Franz Joseph died two years into the war.
