Kapitein Ramart, gezagvoerder van de Antares, gedraagt zich vreemd en wil zo snel mogelijk vertrekken. Zodra het sterrenschip op gepaste afstand is neemt hij weer contact op met Kirk, maar voordat hij zijn zin af kan maken explodeert zijn schip. Charlie toont geen enkel berouw voor de ondergang van de Antares en stelt zich onverschillig op. Hij is enkel bezig met de acceptatie door zijn nieuwe "familie". Zijn tiener hormonen en zijn lange periode in isolement maken dit echter moeilijk. Vreemde gebeurtenissen beginnen zich voor te doen als Charlie boos wordt. Zo verdwijnt Yeoman Janice Rand als ze zijn avances afwijst en Spock breekt zijn benen als hij de jongen wil disciplineren. Ook veroorzaakt hij verwondingen en ongemak bij diegene waarvan hij denkt dat ze hem uitlachen. Charlie eist uiteindelijk dat de Enterprise hem op de dichtstbijzijnde planeet afzet, maar Kirk wil niet dat Charlie ook daar voor problemen zal gaan zorgen. Charlie neemt de controle van het schip over, maar Kirk weet hem al snel te overmeesteren. Er verschijnt plotseling een gezicht op de brug. Het blijkt een Thasian te zijn, het ras dat Charlie opgevoed heeft en hem zijn psionische krachten heeft gegeven. De Thasians waren erachter gekomen dat Charlie van de planeet vertrokken was en stuurden een sterrenschip om de Enterprise te onderscheppen. Ondanks Charlie's smeekbedes nemen ze hem mee terug naar Thasus. Voordat ze vertrekken herstellen ze alle schade die Charlie heeft aangericht.
